Best Practices for Professional Development

Every organization has a system for developing their employees either through classroom training, computer-based training systems, Webinars or off site training. However, few organizations follow a best practice or industry standard of guidelines for professional development. A good example of a best practice would be practices that typically include assessment, planning, implementation and some sort of improvement plan with measurable outcomes.

What system, if any, does your organization implement for professional development? If none exist, what general philosophy does your organization subscribe to in this area?

  1. Manny R: Thanks for creating a blog devoted to professional development. I'm reading a book by Donald Schon entitled "Educating the Reflective Practitioner." Schon (1987) questions the traditional educational approach or rigor of fact and rigid decision-making. Rather, professionals must develop "reflection-in-action" to continue learning and problem solving throughout career and life. Very thought-provoking! Good luck! Cathy

  2. Hi Manny!

When I worked for Capital One Financial Services I was part of Capital One University (COU). The University delivered 85% of the training done for the company. There are about 85 learning professionals in COU. We had continuous professional development through a COP (Community of Practice). We were expected to log in regularly and respond to the posts, questions and challenges there. We, in effect, trained one another through the COP. It was very effective. If you had a learning challenge with one of your clients, you could post your question in the COP and leverage the experience of all your peers to help fine answers!

  3. Cathy, thank you this sounds like a very interesting resource! I don't believe some students today, both traditional and non-traditional alike, are exercising effective "reflection-in-action" or applying fundamental critical thinking to their learning experience.

Sharon, I'm a strong supporter of COP and would love to see it applied in my workplace. Thanks for sharing your experience. Looks like Capital One has the right idea about PD and workforce learning strategies.
